HARTFORD, Conn. - Joe Lieberman, a three-term democratic senator, narrowly lost his party's nomination to Ned Lamont, a political newcomer and anti-war crusader.
Lieberman is only the fourth incumbent senator to lose his party's nomination since 1980 but has indicated that he will still seek a fourth term as an independent.
In his concession Lieberman said: "The old politics of polarization won today, for the sake of our state, our country and my party, I cannot and will not let that result stand."
Only six years ago, the senator, who is Jewish, was his party's choice for Vice President and worried many in America's heartland because of his orthodox beliefs which prohibit him from pork-barrel politics and from conducting affairs of state after sundown.
Shortly after his concession speech, Lieberman announced that he was naming Mel Gibson as his running mate. "Let the healing begin" he said.
